Ship Management Consultant
Martyn has over 38 years’ experience in the marine industry, serving for some 25 years at sea in both cargo and passenger RoRo vessels. He qualified as Chief Engineer in 1983 and subsequently sailed in that rank on those types of vessel.
In 1992 he took the opportunity to attend Bangor university where he gained an engineering degree and a Certificate of Education. He then sought and was awarded both Chartered Engineer and European Engineer status.
After coming ashore, Martyn spent 14 years with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) as a surveyor. Initially he was assigned to work in the Fire and LSA policy branch where he developed regulations and provided advice to the industry. His duties included attendance at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) MSC and sub committees where he presented the UK policy.
He moved to the MCA’s Southampton marine office in 2003, where he undertook a number of duties including Ship Surveyor, Port State Control officer, ISM Lead Auditor, Examiner of Engineers and accident investigation work. His ISM work was broad and involved companies such as Carnival UK and Cunard to Wightlink ferries, while his surveyor work ranged from passenger ship new builds to fishing vessel surveys.
Martyn subsequently became Principal Surveyor in Southampton marine office, responsible for delivery of its work and management of its staff. During this time he was seconded to work as head of the fire and LSA policy Branch where, in consultation with industry, he developed regulation and guidance for the industry.
