Safety Management System Audit (Management level)

The International Safety Management (ISM) Code provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships at sea and for pollution prevention.

Adopted in 1994 by the International Convention of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) within Chapter IX and requiring implementation by 1998, its objectives are:

  • To ensure safety at sea
  • To prevent human injury or loss of life
  • To avoid damage to the environment, in particular to the marine environment, to the ship and other property

To comply with the ISM Code, every companyl must have a functional Safety Management System (SMS), comprising a number of key elements such as a safety and environmental protection policy, safe operating procedures, defined levels of authority, procedures for internal audits etc.

Our highly-experienced maritime management consultants are able to perform independent SMS audits on behalf of a company’s management team, to determine the suitability and effectiveness of the organisation’s SMS. We generate concise and accurate reports identifying non-conformities, observations and noteworthy remarks. Our aim is to assist our clients to remove non-conformities and provide pragmatic solutions to compliance issues.

Our clients often choose to combine the SMS Audit with an Internal ISM Audit, conducted at the same time. Please contact us to discuss your particular requirements.
