Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP)

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) requires that a Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP) is carried aboard tankers of 150 GT or more and other vessels of 400 GT or more.

This plan provides an overview of possible procedures in case of an oil spill, including an emergency contact list (e.g. regulatory authorities, oil cleanup teams, port state control etc.).

A SOPEP should contain:

  • Instructions for the ships oil pollution prevention team (including roles and responsibilities) to fulfil in the event of an oil spill)
  • General information about the ship
  • Procedures to control the discharge of oil in accordance MARPOL regulations
  • General arrangement of fuel/oil lines/tanks
  • Location of oil spill response equipment

Our consultants can provide a concise framework and templates, giving shipping companies and their vessels the ability to complete and maintain their own unique plans.
